Liberty County, Texas

Liberty’s roofs and remodels, on the Trinity since 1831

Liberty was laid out on the banks of the Trinity River in 1831 and is described as the third oldest city in Texas. It is the Liberty County seat today, and we work on its roofs, its houses and the small commercial buildings around town.

Working in Liberty

Liberty was established in 1831 on the banks of the Trinity River, and it is described as the third oldest city in Texas. It is the seat of Liberty County. The 2020 census counted 8,279 residents on 35.4 square miles, 0.4 of them water. The city keeps a twin of the Liberty Bell from Philadelphia. The Geraldine D. Humphreys Cultural Center opened in 1970 and finished a multimillion-dollar renovation in 2010, and the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center opened 3 miles north of town on May 14, 1977. Liberty Municipal Airport sits about 6 miles east, and the Liberty Independent School District serves the city.

Inside the city limits, the City of Liberty’s permit office is the first stop for a re-roof, an addition, or a remodel that moves plumbing or wiring. With 35.4 square miles inside the line, a fair amount of open ground falls in town, and some addresses that feel rural are not. Before the scope is written, we confirm on the city’s map which side of the line the house is on. If the address falls outside the city, there is no city review to pass, and the questions shift to county and state rules on floodplain, septic tanks and culverts. FM 160 and FM 2830 both run through the Liberty area, and Ames, Dayton, Kenefick, Dayton Lakes and Hardin are the nearest listed places.

The Trinity River runs past Liberty and divides Liberty County roughly in half. A river town on flat land has one building question above the others: how high is the floor, and where does the water go when it rains hard for a day. Before we plan an addition, a new slab or a garage conversion, we look at the floodplain designation for the lot and at the grade around the house. An addition built lower than the existing floor, or a patio that sends runoff toward the slab, causes problems that no finish can fix.

The county traces back to a Mexican municipality formed in 1831, and the Republic of Texas organized it as a county in 1836. It counted 91,628 residents at the 2020 census. U.S. 90, State Highway 146 and Interstate 69/U.S. 59 cross it, and part of the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge lies within it. Weather here is upper Gulf Coast weather: hail in spring, tropical systems from June through November, and summer storms with straight-line wind. Roofs on houses and on commercial buildings in Liberty take all three, often in the same year.

The jobs that come up here

Roof replacement on a Liberty house starts with a full inspection of the decking, the flashing at walls and chimneys, and the ventilation, as well as the shingles you can see from the street. If the roof is done, we tear off to the deck and rebuild it properly. If it is not, we tell you what it needs instead. Flat roof replacement is for the low-slope sections: a porch roof tied into the main house, a rear addition, or a small commercial building. Ponding water, blistered membrane and seams that have opened are the usual signs, and the fix is a new membrane over a deck that actually drains.

Home renovation keeps the footprint and refreshes what is tired: floors, paint, trim, doors, lighting, and the bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Luxury bathroom remodeling is the higher-spec version for a primary bath: a large tiled shower with a linear drain, stone counters, heated floors and fixtures that will outlast the trend that sold them. For a professional practice or small business in Liberty, office remodeling reworks the floor plan, lighting, data runs and accessible restrooms, phased so the office can keep seeing clients while we work through it one section at a time.

  • Flat roof replacement Most residential flat roofs we’re asked to replace failed at the same few places: a low corner that holds water, a tie-in that was caulked, a drain nobody cleared.
  • Home renovation Most houses we walk through don’t need a single wall moved.
  • Luxury bathroom remodeling Higher-end bathrooms fail in the same places builder-grade ones do: water behind the tile and steam inside the walls.

Leave it?

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.

My Liberty lot is near the Trinity. Does that affect an addition?

It can, depending on the lot. We check the floodplain designation for the lot and the elevation of your existing floor before drawing anything, because an addition has to meet the rules for where it sits. Sometimes that means a raised floor or a different spot on the lot. We tell you that at the start, not after the slab is formed.

Can you replace just the flat roof over my back porch?

Yes. A low-slope section can be replaced on its own, as long as the tie-in to the shingled roof is flashed properly. That joint is where most porch roofs leak, so we rebuild it rather than caulking over it and hoping.

What makes a bathroom remodel luxury rather than standard?

Mostly materials and custom work: larger tile formats, stone, frameless glass, a linear drain, heated floors, a custom vanity. The waterproofing and plumbing underneath should be the same quality either way. We help you put the money where you will see it and use it every day.

Can an office in Liberty stay open during a remodel?

In most cases, if we phase it. We split the space into sections, keep dust walls up on the active section and schedule the loud work outside your appointment hours. The plan is written so your staff knows which rooms are closed on which days.

Is Liberty really the third oldest city in Texas?

That is how the city is described, and its founding on the Trinity dates to 1831. It has no bearing on your roof, though it is a fair thing to ask. What does bear on your roof is the hail, wind and heat this part of the county gets every year, and we are glad to talk about those as long as you like.
