Damon and Damon Mound, the high point of Brazoria County

Damon Mound rises 144 feet above sea level, the highest point in Brazoria County, and the community of Damon sits partly on the salt dome beneath it. Around it is flat Gulf Coast ground, and 436 people live here along State Highway 36, about 20 miles south of Rosenberg.

Working in Damon

Samuel Damon arrived from the United States in 1831, the first European settler in the area, and the community carries his name. Cattle ranching was an important business here around 1890. The salt dome under Damon was worked for petroleum, sulfur and limestone, and in 1918 a railroad line was built from Rosenberg to haul away the limestone and sulfur quarried from the mound. Damon is 2 miles from the San Bernard River and 8 miles from the Brazos. Needville, Fairchilds, West Columbia, East Columbia and Boling are the places around it, and FM 1462 is the other road through the area.

There is no city government in Damon; it is a census designated place, so no city permit office stands between you and a roof or a remodel. That does not make every job rule-free. County rules on floodplains, septic systems and driveway culverts can apply to a particular property, and so can state rules, and we work out which of them touch your address before work starts. The answer goes into the written scope, so nobody learns about a culvert requirement after the concrete truck has gone home.

The Damon Volunteer Fire Department covers the community, and children attend the Damon Independent School District, with high school students going on to Needville High School. For our part, Damon is a long run from Cypress, so we plan a job here for as few trips as it can take: one visit to measure and photograph, and an install day when the crew, the material and the dumpster arrive together. If the weather turns, we call the day before and move the date rather than start something we cannot finish.

Drainage is the first thing we ask about on any new building here. How high will the slab sit above the yard, how will the pad be graded, and which way will the roof shed its water? On an existing house, we look at spring hail damage, summer wind on the edges and ridge, and the humid heat that ages shingles from the attic side. Each gets photographed and explained before anybody talks about replacing anything, and if the roof is sound, that is what the report says in its first line.

The jobs that come up here

Barndominium foundation construction is where a steel house in Damon either starts right or starts a long list of problems. We build up and grade the pad so water runs away from the building, then form a slab designed for clay soil that moves between wet and dry seasons, with thickened edges under the walls. Ranch-style barndominiums suit flat ground well: one long level, deep porches for shade and a roofline wide enough to keep summer sun off the walls. Farmhouse barndominiums trade some of that for a steeper roof and a more traditional face, and we lay the two side by side before you choose. Before the slab is formed, we also stake the building on the lot with you, so the porch faces where you want it and the driveway reaches the shop door without a dogleg.

On an existing house, metal roof replacement is the job when an old metal roof has rusted through at the fasteners or the panels have loosened in the wind, and roof replacement covers the shingle roofs. When a storm opens a roof, emergency roofing gets a tarp or temporary dry-in on it fast, and the permanent work is planned once we can see everything in daylight. We will also tell you when a metal roof needs only new fasteners and a few panels, because that is a smaller bill and the honest answer. Nobody in Damon needs a whole roof sold to them over a handful of loose screws.

  • Barndominium foundation construction A steel barndominium puts its weight down at the columns, and the wind tries to pull those same columns up.
  • Emergency roofing When a limb comes through the roof or a storm opens it up, the first job is keeping more water out.
  • Farmhouse barndominiums A farmhouse barndominium borrows from the working houses that have stood on Texas land for generations: a long porch, a simple gable, white walls and a kitchen big enough to feed a crew.

Leave it?

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.

Does Damon have a city permit office?

No. Damon is unincorporated, so there is no city government and no city permit to pull. County rules on floodplains, septic systems and culverts, plus any state rules, can still reach a particular property, and we check which ones touch yours before the crew shows up.

Is building near Damon Mound any different from building elsewhere in Damon?

We will not guess about ground we have not looked at. The mound sits on a salt dome that was worked for petroleum, sulfur and limestone, so for a new slab near it we talk through a soil test before design. For a re-roof on an existing house, the mound makes no difference at all.

How close is Damon to the rivers, and does that affect a new barndominium?

Damon is 2 miles from the San Bernard River and 8 from the Brazos. For a new building we check the floodplain status of your lot and set the slab height to match, and if a floodplain rule applies, it shapes the design from the first sketch rather than the last.

Ranch-style or farmhouse for a barndominium in Damon?

Ranch-style keeps everything on one level with a low, wide roof and deep porches. Farmhouse adds a steeper roof and a more traditional face. Both work on flat land, so the choice comes down to how you want it to look and what you want to spend on roof and trim.

How many trips will a Damon roof job take?

Usually two: one to inspect, measure and photograph, and one install day with the crew, the material and the dumpster together. A third happens only if weather or a hidden problem under the shingles forces it, and you hear about that before we come back. Between trips you get the photos and the written scope, so nothing about the job waits on a phone call.

We also work in Needville, Fairchilds, West Columbia, East Columbia, Boling. The whole list is on the Brazoria County page.

Two owners, both veterans, one phone number. We inspect, photograph and tell you what the job really needs, including when it needs nothing yet. Military families and first responders take 10% off.
