Porter Heights roofs, off FM 1314 near the Grand Parkway
Porter Heights is a community of about nineteen hundred people on 3.2 square miles, bounded on the northeast by FM 1314, also known as Conroe Porter Road. It has no city government, and the small airport it once had closed for good in 2021.
Working in Porter Heights
Farm to Market Road 1314, also known as Conroe Porter Road, forms the northeastern boundary of Porter Heights and connects it to the Grand Parkway, the outermost beltway around Houston. The census designated place covers 3.2 square miles and counted 1,903 residents in 2020. North Houston Airport, a small general aviation field in the community, was sold to a property developer and shut down permanently in 2021. Part of Porter Heights is zoned to the New Caney Independent School District and part to the Conroe district. Grangerland, Woodloch, Oak Ridge North and Spring are the nearby places on our map.
Porter Heights is unincorporated, so there is no city to review a roof or a remodel and no city code to satisfy. Rules still exist; they just come from somewhere other than a city. County and state rules on floodplain, septic, driveways and culverts can apply to some jobs, especially a new building or a new slab, while an ordinary re-roof on an existing house rarely touches them. We look up your lot before we start and write down what applies, so you know the answer before the first truck shows up instead of after.
A ceiling stain is the usual first sign of a roof problem, and it is often a long way from the actual hole. Water runs along decking and rafters before it drips, so we trace it in the attic before we climb the roof. Pipe boots, chimney and wall flashing, and valleys are the usual suspects. If the leak comes from one cracked boot on an otherwise healthy roof, you need a repair, and that is what we will write up. Selling a whole new roof to fix one cracked boot is the kind of advice we refuse to give.
Spring is hail season across this part of Montgomery County, and a roof can take hits without leaking for months. Bruised shingles lose their granules and soften, and the leaks show up the following summer, long after anyone connects them to the storm. A check soon after a hailstorm, even when nothing is dripping, is the time to find out. Summer storms with straight-line wind and the June to November Gulf season add their own damage on top, mostly at the edges and the ridge, where a gust gets its grip on a shingle. Gutters are a good tell: a pile of granules at the downspout after a storm means the shingles took a beating.
The jobs that come up here
Hail damage roof replacement begins with a documented inspection. We photograph bruised shingles, dented vents and gutters, and the test squares an adjuster looks for, before anything is torn off, so your carrier sees the same roof we did. Roof replacement is the separate job for a roof that simply wore out: brittle, curling and bald with no storm to blame. Telling those two apart honestly is most of what a good inspection does, and it protects you either way. A worn roof sold as hail damage is a claim problem waiting to happen, and a hail-damaged roof written off as old age leaves you paying for what a claim might have covered.
If you own land around Porter Heights and are weighing a barndominium, barndominium floor plans is a good place to begin: room count, porch depth, garage or shop bay, and how the plan sits on your lot. We sketch it with you, change it as often as you need and only then talk steel and concrete. Barndominium planning ties the floor plan to the site, the slab and the schedule once the layout settles. Inside an existing house, bathroom renovation updates the room in its current footprint, with new tile, fixtures, lighting and a fan that actually pulls the steam out. If a floor plan includes a shop bay, we size its door and slab for what will really park there, from a riding mower to a work truck.
- Barndominium floor plans Every square foot in a barndominium gets paid for twice: once to build it and again every month to cool it.
- Barndominium planning Most barndominium trouble starts before construction, on a piece of land nobody checked closely enough.
- Bathroom renovation If the tub, toilet and vanity are already in the right places, nothing has to move.

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.
Does Porter Heights have a building permit office?
No. It is an unincorporated community, so there is no city permit office and city codes do not apply. Some county and state rules can still reach a job, like floodplain or septic rules on a new build. We check those for your address up front and put the answer in writing. If nothing applies, the scope says that too.
Why is my ceiling stain nowhere near the leak?
Water travels. It runs down the decking and along rafters before it finds a place to drip, sometimes several feet from the hole. We trace it from the attic side, then confirm it on the roof, so the fix goes where the problem actually is. A leak at a pipe boot can show up in the middle of a ceiling, well away from the vent itself.
Should I get my roof checked after hail if nothing is leaking?
Yes. Hail bruises shingles without breaking them, and the damage often leaks months later. A check soon after the storm gives you dated photos, which helps if you decide to file a claim. Whether to file is your call and your carrier’s. We also photograph the gutters and the soft metal on vents, which show the size of the hail clearly.
Can you draw a barndominium floor plan before I buy steel?
That is the right order. We work out rooms, porch, garage or shop bay and how the plan sits on your lot first. Steel and concrete are ordered only after the plan is settled, because changing a drawing is easy and changing a frame is not.
Do you work on both sides of FM 1314?
Yes. We work all through this part of Montgomery County, on either side of Conroe Porter Road and out toward the Grand Parkway. Call with the address and we will set a time that works for you. Storm damage comes first after bad weather, and routine visits fill in around it.
