Deer Park roofs after the 2023 tornado and the storms before it
A large EF3 tornado hit downtown Deer Park on January 24, 2023, and severely damaged entire neighborhoods. Roofs replaced in the rush after a storm like that deserve a second look, so the first question on any job here is when and how the current roof went on.
Working in Deer Park
Simeon H. West founded Deer Park in 1892 and named it for the many deer on the Gulf plains, and by about 1894 it had a station on the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway. Shell Oil Company broke ground on a refinery here in 1928, and residents voted to incorporate on December 12, 1948. The city calls itself the Birthplace of Texas, because the initial surrender treaty after the Battle of San Jacinto was drafted in Dr. George Moffitt Patrick’s cabin. Today 34,495 people live in roughly 9,000 homes, with the Houston Ship Channel, the dredged-out Buffalo Bayou, along the north side.
Weather is the theme here. Tropical Storm Allison in June 2001 and Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 both dropped major rain on the area, and the 2023 tornado tore through neighborhoods in a matter of minutes. A roof replaced in the weeks after a disaster was often installed while every crew in the region was overbooked, so we look closely at the details that get skipped under pressure: nailing at the edges, flashing at walls and chimneys, and whether the old drip edge was reused. Inside, rooms that took water in 2001 or 2017 can hide old repairs behind new paint.
Deer Park is an incorporated city, so roofing and remodel permits come from the City of Deer Park, and we pull them with the job. The public schools here are run by Deer Park Independent School District. Pasadena and La Porte sit right next door, and Channelview is across the channel. With about 9,000 homes in town, word gets around about who showed up and who did not, and that suits us fine. We would rather be the crew that tells you a roof is fine than the one that sells you a replacement you did not need.
A city that took heavy rain in 2001 and again in 2017 can have houses that were dried out twice. Each round of repairs can leave its own layer: drywall from one storm above a patch from the next, flooring laid over flooring, baseboard nailed over baseboard. When we remodel a room here we take it down to what is original before we build back, because stacking new work on two generations of repairs is how floors end up uneven and doors stop closing. If your house came through both storms dry, the walk-through will show that too, and the scope gets shorter.
The jobs that come up here
Wind damage roof replacement and storm damage roof replacement are the two jobs this city knows best. Wind damage shows as creased, lifted or missing shingles in patterns that follow the storm’s direction; storm damage adds debris punctures and water intrusion. We photograph both from the roof, mark every damaged area, and give you a written report your adjuster can follow. Ask for that report even if you hire someone else. On a wind replacement we also install a high-wind ridge cap product instead of cut three-tab pieces, because the ridge is where wind starts pulling a roof apart. Emergency roofing handles the first night: tarps, dry-in and a phone that gets answered.
When a roof is simply worn out, architectural shingle replacement with new edge metal and a high-wind nailing pattern is the straightforward answer, and a house that came through 2023 untouched still gets the same edge and ridge details as a storm replacement. Inside, rooms that flooded in Allison or Harvey are good candidates for bathroom renovation or home renovation, especially where water damage was dried and covered over instead of removed. Commercial roof repair is on the list for owners of shop and plant-side buildings in an industrial city like this one, where a low-slope roof with a failing seam can leak for months before anyone sees it. We start every one of these on a ladder with a camera, and the contract comes later.
- Architectural shingle replacement Plenty of older Houston subdivisions were built with three-tab shingles, and many of those roofs are at the end of their run.
- Commercial roof repair Water on a ceiling tile is almost never directly under the hole that let it in.
- Emergency roofing When a limb comes through the roof or a storm opens it up, the first job is keeping more water out.

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.
Our roof was replaced after the 2023 Deer Park tornado. Should someone check it?
It is worth a look, especially if the installer was from out of town or the job was done in a day during the rush. We check edge nailing, flashing at walls and whether old metal was reused. If it is right, you get photos showing it is right.
Does Deer Park require a city permit for a new roof?
Yes. Deer Park has been incorporated since 1948, so the City of Deer Park issues the permit. We apply for it, schedule the inspections, and the permit number goes on your paperwork.
Our Deer Park house smells musty since the Harvey repairs. What does that mean?
Usually moisture or mold behind a finished wall, under flooring or in the cavity under a tub. We use a moisture meter and open a small inspection hole where the readings are high. Fixing it means removing the wet material and finding the source; paint over it and it comes back.
Does living near the Houston Ship Channel change how a Deer Park roof should be built?
Not in any special way we can point to. What matters in Deer Park is the wind and rain record, so edge details, nailing, underlayment and flashing get the attention. A good roof here is a well-fastened roof.
Can you fix a leaking flat roof on a Deer Park business?
Yes, that is what Commercial Roof Repair covers. We find the failure first, often a split seam, a clogged drain or flashing at a rooftop unit, and repair that before anyone talks about replacement. If the membrane is past repair, we show you why with photos.
