Humble’s oil-boom downtown and the neighborhoods around it
Oil came in at Humble in 1904, and by 1905 its field was the largest producing oilfield in Texas. The Humble Oil and Refining Company, founded here in 1911, became a predecessor of Exxon, and that boom still defines how people tell the town’s story.
Working in Humble
Joseph Dunman is believed to have been the first settler in the Humble area, in 1828, and the town took its name from Pleasant Smith Humble, who ran the first post office out of his home. When the oil boom faded, many landowners went back to truck farming, dairy farming and timber. Humble incorporated in 1933, nearly three decades after the first oil strike. It covers 9.9 square miles and had 16,795 residents at the 2020 census, with the San Jacinto River nearby, Atascocita about six miles to the east, and Aldine and Spring among its neighbors.
Downtown Humble sits on a salt dome. It makes a good piece of trivia, and as far as roofing goes it changes nothing about how shingles are nailed. What does matter is that Humble mixes a downtown with residential neighborhoods, so a call might be about a commercial building with a low-slope roof or a family home with a shingle roof. Each gets a different inspection and a different kind of scope. Both see the same spring hail and the same summer storms, so the weather is the one constant.
Humble is an incorporated city, so permits for roofing and remodeling inside city limits come from the City of Humble. Most of the city is served by the Humble Independent School District, which also serves Atascocita. For business owners, a remodel in an occupied storefront has to keep the doors open and the inspectors satisfied at the same time, and we plan the phasing around both. Restaurants carry their own load of inspections, from grease and hood work to health department visits, so timelines there get written with those dates in mind.
Humble’s history runs deep. Joseph Dunman settled here in 1828, and the town had a post office, an oilfield and a refining company long before construction began in neighboring Atascocita in the 1970s. For a building owner, age shows up on the roof. An older commercial building can carry more than one roof stacked on a single deck, each added when the last one wore out, and the weight and the trapped moisture add up. We cut a small core sample before quoting any commercial replacement, so the price reflects how many layers are coming off and what the deck looks like underneath. Once we know that, the choice between a recover and a full tear-off mostly makes itself.
The jobs that come up here
Retail remodeling covers a storefront refresh or a full reconfiguration for a new tenant, with sales floors, fitting rooms, lighting and accessible entrances. Restaurant remodeling adds the parts that make food service different: grease interceptors, hood and exhaust work, and coordination with health inspections before opening day. Commercial roof replacement is the job when a low-slope roof over a business has failed across the field, and we start with drains and slope, because standing water is what kills those roofs. TPO roofing replacement is one of the single-ply options we price for a low-slope roof, alongside a repair if the membrane still has life left. We phase commercial work so a business can stay open, and we tell you up front which days it cannot.
For homes around Humble, roof replacement on an aging shingle roof is the core residential job, with new decking where needed, new flashing and better ventilation. Hail damage roof replacement comes after spring storms, with a documented inspection your adjuster can follow and an honest answer about whether a claim makes sense. If the roof is fine, the report says so, and you have saved yourself a deductible. Bathroom remodeling fits a house whose original bath no longer works for the family, with the layout changed to suit how you live now. Kitchen remodeling is a natural next step once the roof is settled, and we are happy to plan both on one schedule. On older commercial buildings we also check parapet flashing, because that is where many low-slope leaks begin. A building that shares a wall with its neighbor also shares a roof edge, so we look at the flashing on both sides of the line before we touch either one.
- Commercial roof replacement Replacing a commercial roof is mostly a logistics problem with a roofing problem in the middle of it.
- Hail damage roof replacement Hail damage on a shingle is a bruise in the mat, soft when you press it, usually with the granules knocked off in a rough circle.
- Restaurant remodeling A restaurant remodel answers to more inspectors than almost any other commercial job, and the kitchen is where schedules slip.

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.
Who issues permits for a storefront remodel in Humble?
The City of Humble, for buildings inside city limits. Commercial work usually needs plans reviewed before the permit is issued, so we build that review time into the schedule. Restaurants also go through health department review.
Can you remodel our Humble restaurant without closing for weeks?
Sometimes. Front-of-house work can often be phased over nights or slow days, while kitchen and hood work usually needs a short closure. We plan the sequence with you and give you the closure days in writing before we start.
Does Humble’s salt dome affect foundations or roofs?
Not in any way that shows up in our work. The soil issue we deal with here is the same expansive clay found across Greater Houston, which moves slabs with the wet and dry seasons. Roofs answer to the weather.
Do you replace flat roofs on commercial buildings in Humble?
Yes, through Commercial Roof Replacement, including TPO and other single-ply systems where they fit. We look at insulation, drains and the deck before recommending a system, and if a repair will carry the roof a few more years, we tell you that first.
How do we know whether hail actually damaged our Humble roof?
Look at soft metals first: dents in gutters, vents and AC fins tell you hail was big enough to matter. On the shingles, hail leaves round bruises where granules are knocked loose. We photograph and mark each one, and if there is not enough to justify a claim, we say so.
