Pasadena, from the Ship Channel to Galveston Bay

Pasadena counted 151,950 people at the 2020 census, a big city that runs from industrial neighborhoods along the Ship Channel to a southeast edge that fronts Galveston Bay. On January 24, 2023, an EF3 tornado tore through northwestern Pasadena, and a roof repaired in a hurry after a storm like that deserves a second look.

Working in Pasadena

John H. Burnett of Galveston founded the town in 1893 and named it after Pasadena, California. The 1900 hurricane that destroyed Galveston also heavily damaged Pasadena, an early lesson in where the town sits. After an earlier incorporation was canceled, the city incorporated for good in 1928, and by the middle of the century its economy was tied to petroleum and heavy industry. The town once called itself the Strawberry Capital of the World, and the Strawberry Festival still comes around every year. With the Ship Channel on its northern edge and Galveston Bay at its southeast corner, Pasadena takes weather off the water from two directions, which is worth remembering when you choose how a new roof gets fastened.

The 2023 tornado severely damaged multiple neighborhoods and apartment complexes in the northwest part of the city. After a storm like that, roofs get patched fast and sometimes not well. If your roof was repaired or replaced in the rush, we will go over it with you: nailing at the edges, flashing at the walls, and whether the decking that was replaced matches what was left. Partial repairs often leave the weakest part of a roof right next to the newest part, and that seam is where the next storm starts. A tornado also throws debris, so we look for punctures and cracked shingles well away from the obvious damage.

Pasadena is incorporated, so the City of Pasadena is the authority for permits inside its limits, and most of the city is in Pasadena ISD. The Houston Ship Channel forms the northern border, and Armand Bayou Nature Center protects 2,500 acres on the western shore of Galveston Bay. Interstate 45, State Highway 225, Beltway 8 and Fairmont Parkway carry most of the traffic, and Strawberry Road still carries the old nickname. Tell us your cross streets when you call, because a city this size covers a lot of ground.

The jobs that come up here

Wind damage roof replacement is the first page for anyone in the tornado path. For the rest of the city, roof replacement and asphalt shingle replacement cover houses whose roofs have simply reached the end, and hail damage roof replacement covers the springs that bring ice. Commercial roof repair and commercial roof inspection fit shops and small industrial buildings along the main roads, where a flat roof holding water is a slow leak waiting for the next downpour. On those buildings we check the drains and scuppers first, because a roof that cannot shed water fails from the inside out long before the membrane looks worn.

Pasadena’s apartment complexes took real damage in 2023, and multifamily remodeling is built for owners who need units repaired while the neighbors stay home: phasing, access and noise all get planned in advance, and residents get notice before their unit is touched. On single-family houses, bathroom renovation and kitchen renovation are the usual inside jobs, and veteran ADA remodeling helps owners who want to stay put as stairs, tubs and narrow doors get harder to manage. Retail remodeling fits a storefront that has to keep selling while the work gets done around it.

Leave it?

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.

My roof was patched after the 2023 tornado. Should I have it looked at?

If the work was done fast by whoever was available, yes. We check the nailing, the flashing and where the new decking meets the old. If the repair is sound, we tell you so and leave it alone.

Do you take on apartment buildings in Pasadena?

Yes, through Multifamily Remodeling and our commercial roofing work. Occupied buildings need a phasing plan so residents keep water, power and a way in while units are worked on. We write that plan into the scope before we start.

Which parts of Pasadena do you cover?

All of it, from the neighborhoods near the Ship Channel in the north to the southeast side near Armand Bayou. It is a big city, so give us your cross streets when you call and we will plan the visit around them.

Should the flat roof on my Pasadena shop be repaired or replaced?

It depends on how much of the membrane has failed. If the problems are a few seams, a drain and some edge metal, repair makes sense. If water is getting into the insulation across large areas, TPO Roofing Replacement is the honest answer, and we will show you the core samples that tell us which.

Does the City of Pasadena permit roof replacements?

Pasadena is incorporated, so the City of Pasadena sets the requirements for work inside its limits. We find out what your job needs before the crew arrives and keep a copy in the job file. If your address is outside the city, the county rules apply instead, and we check that as well.
