Hail Damage Roof Replacement When the Bruises Are Real

Hail damage on a shingle is a bruise in the mat, soft when you press it, usually with the granules knocked off in a rough circle. Some hail does that. Plenty of spring hail in Houston only scuffs granules and dents the gutters, and that’s a different conversation.

Hail inspection has a method. Soft metals tell us size and direction first: dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents and the fins on AC condensers show how big the stones were and which way they came. On the shingles we mark test squares on each slope, commonly ten feet by ten, and count hits inside them. A real hit is a bruise you can feel, a fractured mat, or a crack, often with granules displaced and the asphalt exposed. Slopes facing the storm take more than slopes facing away.

Then the hard part: telling hail from everything that looks like it. Blistering from heat, granule loss from age, foot traffic scuffs, manufacturing marks and old mechanical damage all get mistaken for hail, sometimes honestly and sometimes not. Small hail that knocks loose granules without bruising the mat is cosmetic on most roofs. It ages the shingle somewhat, but it doesn’t open the roof to water the way a fracture does, and many carriers treat the two very differently.

If the roof does need replacing, hail is a good reason to think about what goes back. Impact-resistant shingles are worth pricing in a region that sees hail most springs, and some carriers adjust premiums for them; ask yours, since we can’t speak for any policy. The replacement also covers everything the stones hit: dented vents and flashing get replaced, damaged gutters get noted or replaced, and any decking cracked by large stones gets swapped before the new roof goes on.

Houston roofs live hard. Spring hail, hurricane season from June to November, summer storms that throw straight-line wind, and attic temperatures that cook shingles from underneath. Algae streaks the north slopes. None of that means every roof needs replacing, but it does mean an inspection has to look at the attic, the vents and the flashing, not just the shingles you can see from the yard.

The straight answer on hail damage roof replacement

The honest version, including the cases where you should spend the money somewhere else.

The right call
  • Test squares show bruised or fractured shingles across multiple slopes, well beyond one or two random marks.
  • Large hail dented vents, gutters and condenser fins, and the shingles show matching hits.
  • Leaks or exposed mat appeared after a spring hailstorm on a roof that was dry before it.
Not the right call
  • If the hail only knocked granules loose without bruising the mat, the damage is cosmetic, and we’ll tell you not to file on our account.
  • If the marks are heat blisters or old wear, that’s age, and calling it hail could put a false claim on your record.
  • If a few shingles on one slope took hits from a small storm, a repair matched to the existing roof may be all it needs.

How we run it

  1. Soft metal check

We read the dents in gutters, vents and AC fins to judge hail size and direction before looking at shingles.

  2. Test squares

We mark test squares on each slope and count bruises, fractures and cracks inside them.

  3. Photos and findings

Each hit is photographed with a scale, and cosmetic marks are noted separately from functional damage.

  4. Replacement if it’s needed

If the roof is done, we replace shingles, damaged vents and flashing, and any cracked decking together.

What we ask before we price it

  • How old is the roof, and has it been repaired before?
  • Any ceiling stains, and do they come back after every rain or only in a storm?
  • Is there an HOA with rules on shingle color or material?
  • Are you talking to an insurance carrier about this roof, or paying out of pocket?
  • Do you know who installed the current roof, and is there any paperwork from it?
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

Dents in gutters, vents and AC fins are a good first clue from the ground. The shingles need a close look: a true hail hit feels soft or cracked under your thumb. Let someone who knows what to look for do the climbing.

What size hail damages a shingle roof?

It depends on the shingle, its age and the angle of the strike. Larger stones are more likely to fracture the mat, while small hail often only moves granules. The test squares tell us what this storm did to this roof.

Is granule loss hail damage?

Sometimes. Granules knocked off in a circle with a bruise underneath is hail. Granules worn off evenly with age, or collected in gutters after years of rain, isn’t. We’ll show you the difference on your own roof.

Should I file a hail claim?

That’s your decision, made with your carrier. We’ll tell you what we found, including when it’s cosmetic, and you can weigh that against your deductible and your policy.

Do impact-resistant shingles lower my insurance?

Some carriers offer an adjustment for them and some don’t. Ask your carrier before you choose a shingle; we won’t promise a discount we don’t control.

How long do I have after a hailstorm?

Policies set their own deadlines, so read yours or ask your carrier. An inspection soon after the storm also makes it easier to tie damage to the date it happened.
