Iowa Colony, from rice farms to Meridiana along Highway 288
The Emigration Land Company of Des Moines, Iowa, founded Iowa Colony in 1908, and rice farming followed in 1920. Today the city sits on State Highway 288 just south of the Pearland city limits, 22 miles from downtown Houston, with 8,154 people counted in 2020 and a home rule charter passed that same year.

Oil was discovered in 1948 and brought regional jobs, and in the 1960s Iowa Colony began to grow quickly as part of greater Houston. It incorporated in 1972, and voters passed a Home Rule Charter on November 3, 2020. Meridiana Elementary School was built to serve the Meridiana master-planned community inside the city, and students in residential parts of Iowa Colony attend Alvin Independent School District schools. Manvel, Arcola, Sandy Point, Fresno and Sienna are the neighbors, and State Highway 6 is the other main road besides 288.
