Beach City’s roofs and decks, along seven miles of Trinity Bay

Beach City began after World War II as weekend houses and fishing camps, many built by people from Baytown, along the northwestern shore of Trinity Bay. Today it is a city of 3,221, and a house with the bay in front of it asks more of its roof and deck than one farther inland.

Working in Beach City

Beach City stretches 7 miles along the northwestern shore of Trinity Bay in western Chambers County, 9 to 10 miles southeast by east of Baytown. Small summer and weekend houses and fishing camps started going up along the shoreline after World War II, and by the early 1960s the place, then called Tri-City Beach, had about 500 permanent residents. In April 1966 voters approved incorporation 103 to 4 to keep Baytown from annexing them. The volunteer fire department followed in 1967. The 2020 census counted 3,221 people, and most of the city is zoned to the Barbers Hill Independent School District.

That 1966 vote is why the City of Beach City, not Baytown, is the local government for a house inside its limits. A re-roof, a deck or an addition goes through the city’s own review, and we ask the city what a particular job needs before it lands on the schedule. FM 2354 and FM 565 serve the area, and Baytown, Cove, Morgans Point, La Porte and Oak Island are the closest listed places. McCollum Park holds the grave of early pioneer Solomon Barrow, and RWJ Airpark, a privately owned public-use airport, is inside the city.

Seven miles of shoreline means many houses here sit with open water in front of them. Wind off the bay reaches the roof at full strength, and the edges, the ridge and any loose flashing take it first. Decks face it too, along with full sun most of the day, and wood boards dry out, split and cup while plain steel fasteners rust. Spring adds hail to the list. None of that rules out a good roof or deck. It means choosing materials made for exposure and fastening them as if the wind will test every one.

Chambers County counted 46,571 residents in 2020, and almost a third of its area is water. Its south and southwest parts sit on Trinity Bay and East Bay in the Galveston Bay Area. Interstate 10, State Highway 146 and the Grand Parkway run through the county, and Mont Belvieu, Winnie, Stowell and Oak Island are among its communities. Hurricane season runs June through November along this shore, and the planning for it is best done in the spring, while roofers still have open calendars and the weather allows a careful job.

The jobs that come up here

Impact-resistant shingles are rated by how they hold up when steel balls of increasing size are dropped on them, and the top rating is Class 4. For a Beach City house in the path of spring hail, that rating is worth knowing about when the roof comes due. It does not make a roof indestructible, and some carriers treat it differently while others do not, so ask yours. Storm damage roof replacement is the call after a storm brings wind, rain and hail together, and we document each kind of damage separately so the paperwork matches what actually happened on each slope.

Composite deck replacement swaps a tired wood deck for composite boards that will not splinter, split or need staining. Near the bay, we pay close attention to what lies under them: treated framing rated for ground contact where it needs it, stainless or coated fasteners, and joist tape along the top of the joists to keep water from sitting in the screw holes. Living room remodeling is the inside job people tend to ask about once the roof is settled, from bigger windows where there is a view worth framing to new flooring, lighting and a layout that works.

  • Composite deck replacement Swapping a tired wood deck for composite sounds like a board job, and sometimes it is.
  • Impact-resistant shingles Impact-resistant shingles are built to take a hailstone without cracking through.
  • Living room remodeling The usual living room complaint is that it’s walled off from everything else, a formal room by the front door that nobody sits in.

Leave it?

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.

Why is Beach City its own city and not part of Baytown?

Residents voted 103 to 4 in April 1966 to incorporate, specifically to prevent annexation by Baytown. As a result, the City of Beach City is the local government for work inside its limits, and that is who we ask about requirements for your job.

Are impact-resistant shingles worth it this close to the bay?

If your roof is due anyway, they are worth weighing against standard shingles. They handle hail better, and wind performance depends on installation as much as on the shingle itself. Ask your carrier whether a Class 4 roof changes your premium before you decide.

What fasteners should a deck near Trinity Bay use?

Stainless steel, or fasteners rated for coastal or treated-lumber use. Plain or lightly coated screws rust out, and a rusted screw lets the board loose long before the board itself fails. We name the fastener in the written scope so you can see exactly what goes in.

Can you tell hail damage from wind damage on the same roof?

Usually. Hail leaves round bruises and knocked-off granules scattered over a slope. Wind lifts, creases or tears tabs, mostly along the edges and on the windward side. We photograph and label each so the claim describes what actually happened.

Is spring the best time to plan a Beach City re-roof?

If you can choose, yes. Hurricane season starts in June, and after a big storm roofers are booked for weeks. Getting a sound roof on before summer means you go into the season knowing what is over your head.
