El Lago’s astronaut-era houses and the work they need now
El Lago has been home to at least 47 astronauts, and many of its houses were custom built for them and their families after the city was established in 1961. Custom homes from that era come with their own quirks, and we plan for them before we quote.
Working in El Lago
El Lago is a small city in Harris County, just 0.7 square miles, and 8.45 percent of that area is water. It was established in 1961 and counted 3,090 residents at the 2020 census. The land has a longer story than the houses: it sits on the site of one of the main hideouts of the pirate and privateer Jean Lafitte. The space era shows everywhere you look, from Neil Armstrong Park and McNair Memorial Park to the Space Shuttle on the city logo. That is a lot of history for a city you can walk across in an afternoon.
Custom-built houses from the 1960s were designed one at a time, which means no two share the same roof framing, window sizes or bathroom layout. That is good news for character and harder news for remodeling, because nothing is standard. We open the attic before we promise a roof price, check how the original rafters and decking have held up, and look for past additions that tie into the main roof at odd angles. Inside, original tile, built-in cabinetry or a feature wall may be worth saving, and we will say so before anything gets demolished. Expect a surprise or two, and expect to hear about it the same day we find it.
Water covers about 8.45 percent of El Lago, so some homes sit close to it, and that changes the maintenance picture. A house near water carries more humidity in the attic, more algae on shaded slopes and more wear on exterior wood. Custom homes are also hard to price from a distance, since no two are framed the same, so we never give an El Lago number over the phone. We walk the house, open the attic and write a scope for that house alone. With 3,090 residents, word travels fast in a city this small, and we would like what travels to be good.
El Lago is an incorporated city with its own government, so permits for roofing and remodeling come from the City of El Lago rather than Harris County or Houston. In a city this small, we coordinate parking and material drop-offs so a dumpster does not block half a street. Students here attend the Clear Creek Independent School District. Its neighbors include Taylor Lake Village, Seabrook, Nassau Bay, Kemah and Clear Lake Shores, and every year from June to November it shares their exposure to Gulf hurricane season.
The jobs that come up here
Luxury home renovation suits the owner who wants to keep the character of a 1960s custom house while bringing the kitchen, baths and finishes up to date without moving walls. When one bathroom needs to work for one household’s specific needs, with a deeper tub, a curbless shower or a vanity at the right height, custom bathroom remodeling builds it around those people. Bathroom renovation is the lighter option when the layout works and only the finishes have aged. Kitchen remodeling is the right answer when the old closed kitchen needs to open to the living space, which means structural work and a real plan. We would rather save an original detail than rip it out because ripping is easier.
On the roof, a full roof replacement on these houses often means replacing some decking and rebuilding flashing at additions that were tied in decades ago. Hurricane season puts wind resistance at the top of the list, so we use edge metal, starter strips and the high-wind nailing pattern. Ask us about Class 4 shingles too, and then ask your carrier. If a sunroom or enclosed porch was added along the way, sunroom renovation can bring it up to date with better glass, insulation and a roof tie-in that stops leaking. Deck replacement suits an older wood deck near the water, where humidity and sun break boards down faster, and composite boards are worth pricing as the replacement. Every scope lists which original pieces stay and why.
- Bathroom renovation If the tub, toilet and vanity are already in the right places, nothing has to move.
- Custom bathroom remodeling Builder bathrooms are designed for nobody in particular: a short vanity, a shower head at one height, a tub every house gets.
- Kitchen remodeling A kitchen remodel changes the layout: the sink moves to an island, the wall to the family room comes out, the range gets a hood that actually vents outdoors.

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.
Who handles permits for a remodel in El Lago?
The City of El Lago. It is a separate incorporated city, so permits come from its own government rather than Houston or Harris County. We handle the application and the inspections as part of the job.
Can you keep the original character of a 1960s El Lago custom home while updating it?
Yes, and that is the approach we prefer. We identify what is original and worth keeping, like tile, built-ins or a fireplace wall, then plan new work around it. If something is failing, we tell you and offer the closest match we can find.
Do older El Lago roofs usually need new decking?
Some do. Framing and decking from the 1960s may be patched or delaminated, especially around old leaks, valleys and additions. We check from the attic before we price it and list decking replacement as its own line so you are not surprised mid-job.
Is a city of 0.7 square miles like El Lago harder to work in?
Only in logistics. On small residential streets we plan dumpster placement, parking and deliveries with the city and the neighbors before we start. The work itself gets the same care it would anywhere.
How do you deal with past additions that tie into an El Lago roof at odd angles?
Carefully, because those joints are where older roofs leak most. We remove the old flashing, check the framing at the tie-in, and rebuild it with new step flashing, counter flashing and ice and water shield. It takes longer, and it is the difference between a roof that leaks and one that does not.
