Tomball, where the coastal plain meets the low hills
Tomball was called Peck until 1907, when it took the name of congressman Thomas Henry Ball, the man who got the railroad run through downtown. It sits right where the low hills of Texas give way to the flat Gulf coastal plain, and the ground under a house here can be either.
Working in Tomball
The discovery well of the Tomball Oil Field came in on May 27, 1933, and the town incorporated the same year. Humble Oil then supplied residents with free water and natural gas in exchange for drilling rights, a deal that lasted until 1988. The town grew outward from that train stop downtown and had 12,341 residents at the 2020 census. Ball, the man the town is named for, also had a major hand in developing the Port of Houston, so the town carries the name of someone who shaped the whole region.
The line between hills and coastal plain matters for anything built on the ground. Flat clay ground holds water and moves as it wets and dries, while slightly higher ground drains better. Before we pour a slab for a barndominium or set posts for a patio cover, we look at where water goes on your lot during a heavy rain and plan the pad around it. On a lot that sits low, raising the pad costs far less than living with water at the door. A soil test on a new building site tells the engineer how the slab should be reinforced, and it is money well spent before a single yard of concrete is ordered.
Tomball is incorporated, so the City of Tomball is the authority for work inside its limits, and land outside the city answers to Harris County. Schools are part of Tomball ISD. Main Street is FM 2920, Tomball Parkway is State Highway 249, and the Grand Parkway serves the area. The German Heritage Festival in March and the German Christmas Market in December are what most outsiders know the town for. Land with a Tomball mailing address is not always inside the City of Tomball, so the city line is the first thing we check for your property.
Worth knowing here
- Tomball is primarily served by FM 2920 (Main Street) east to west and State Highway 249 (Tomball Parkway) north to south.
The jobs that come up here
On acreage outside the city limits, a barndominium is a reasonable thing to build. Custom barndominium construction starts with barndominium planning and a walk of the land, then barndominium site preparation and concrete slab foundations sized for clay that moves. Barndominium steel framing keeps the frame straight in Gulf wind, and turnkey barndominiums means one company carries the job all the way to move-in. Barndominium floor plans come before any of it, because where the porches, doors and windows go decides how the building handles the afternoon sun and which way the rain runs off.
Closer to town, roof replacement and hail damage roof replacement are the common calls, and metal roof replacement suits older houses and outbuildings where a long-lasting roof is the goal. R-Panel metal roofing fits the shops and barns on the larger lots around town. Inside, kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling bring older Tomball houses up to date without losing what makes them feel like a small town. For an owner on acreage who wants to age in place, veteran ADA construction can build a single-level house or barndominium with wide doors, a level entry and a roll-in shower planned from the first drawing.
- Barndominium floor plans Every square foot in a barndominium gets paid for twice: once to build it and again every month to cool it.
- Barndominium site preparation A barndo slab is only as good as the ground under it, and the ground around Houston is flat, wet half the year and full of clay that swells and shrinks.
- Barndominium steel framing Red iron is the structural steel skeleton of a barndominium: heavy columns and rafters bolted into rigid frames that carry the roof, the walls and the wind.

Plenty of roofs we look at need a repair or nothing at all. If that is yours, you will hear it from us first.
Can I build a barndominium inside the City of Tomball?
It depends on the zoning and any deed restrictions on your lot, and the city is the one that decides. Outside the city limits, on acreage under Harris County, it is usually more straightforward. Send us your address and we will find out before you spend money on plans.
Is the ground around Tomball good for a slab?
It varies, which is the point. Some lots sit on higher ground that drains well, others on flat clay that holds water and moves. A soil test and a look at drainage decide how the slab is designed, and we do not guess at either.
Do you put metal roofs on barns and shops?
Yes. R-panel is the usual choice for an outbuilding, and it goes on quickly and stands up to wind when the fastener spacing is right. For a house or a barndominium, a concealed-fastener standing seam panel is often the better roof.
How long does barndominium planning take before anything gets built?
Longer than most people expect, and that is a good thing. Floor plans, site work, the slab design and any approvals all have to line up before steel is ordered. Rushing planning is how a build ends up costing more later.
Can you update an older Tomball house without losing its character?
Yes, and the trick is restraint. A house in a town that still holds a German Christmas Market every December does not need to come out looking like a new subdivision model. We update the kitchen, baths and systems and leave alone the parts that give the place its age.
